1mDESCRIPTION22m
4mRnews24m accepts news from standard input and spools it up
for processing, space permitting. If space is persis
tently too short, 4mrnews24m looks for the file
4m/usr/lib/news/rnews.stall24m; if it is present, 4mrnews24m waits
patiently for more space to appear, while if it is absent,
4mrnews24m discards the news and reports this.
4mCunbatch24m is a historical synonym for 4mrnews24m; there is no
difference in what they do.
4mNewsspool24m is the actual spooling program. It creates a
spool file with a name based on the current time (which
avoids the need for locking) in the spooling directory
4m/usr/spool/news/in.coming24m and copies the input 4mfile24m(s)
(standard input default) to it, stripping off any `1m#!22m 1mcun22m
1mbatch22m' or `1m#!22m 1mc7unbatch22m' header as it does so. If invoked
with the 1m-i22m option, when finished it attempts to start
4mnewsrun24m to process the new news immediately. 4mRnews24m
invokes it this way if and only if the file
4m/usr/lib/news/rnews.immed24m exists.
4mNewsrun24m should be run periodically (e.g. by 4mcron24m(8)) to
process spooled news. 4mNewsrunning24m can be used to turn
4mnewsrun24m's processing off and on if it is desired to avoid
major news processing during certain hours. `1mnewsrunning22m
1moff22m' instructs any currentlyrunning 4mnewsrun24m to stop as
soon as possible, and prevents later ones from running.
`1mnewsrunning22m 1mon22m' removes the inhibition (but does not
actually start a new 4mnewsrun24m). Without an argument, 4mnews24m
4mrunning24m reports the current status: ``off'' or ``on''.
4mNewsrun24m checks for the 4mstop24m file that 4mnewsrunning24m 4moff24m cre
ates, verifies that there is enough disk space for pro
cessing, and then starts processing spooled news. Each
batch is run through 4mc7decode24m (if necessary), de4mcompress24med
(if necessary), and then fed to 4mrelaynews24m (on the server,
if 4m/usr/lib/news/server24m exists and contains its name). If
4mrelaynews24m fails, 4mnewsrun24m reports this (by mail to 1musenet22m)

and attempts to save the spooled batch in the 4mbad24m subdi
rectory for human inspection. To bound the accumulation
in 4mbad24m in the event of some systematic problem, 4mnewsrun24m
limits 4mbad24m to 50 files; this default can be changed by
placing a 4mlimit24m file in 4mbad24m, containing one ASCII line
with the desired numeric limit. A limit of 0 will prevent
saving of bad batches.
4mC7decode24m passes standard input to standard output, decod
ing a complex and bizarre encoding of 8bit data as print
able ASCII characters.

1mHISTORY22m
Part of C News. Written at University of Toronto by Henry
Spencer.
1mBUGS22m
4mC7decode24m should be part of the underlying transport mecha
nism. It hasn't been tested very well in the C News envi
ronment. 4mBdecode24m (see 4mnewsmail24m(8)) is probably better for
most uses.
4mRelaynews24m is a bit too enthusiastic about declaring
batches bad, so things end up in 4mbad24m for no terribly good
reason. Actually, it's rare for the contents of 4mbad24m to be
very interesting.
